Mataró businessman arrested after abandoning injured employee at hospital
Mataró businessman arrested after abandoning injured employee at hospital: "The Catalan police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, have arrested a businessman from Mataró after he left an injured employee at the doors of a local hospital, asking him to keep quiet about where he worked.
The injured man from Ecuador was working without a contract and lost his hand in an accident at the nautical workshop where he worked. His boss told him to say that he had injured himself while out fishing and to say that he had been brought to the hospital by a man he had met in the street.
Staff at the hospital were suspicious of the patient’s explanations and alerted the police, who arrested the businessman a week later. Telecinco reports that the company’s foreman was also taken into custody."

Two Almería men arrested for causing 27 traffic accidents
Two Almería men arrested for causing 27 traffic accidents: "After months of investigation involving more than 50 officers, two men from Huércal Overa have finally been arrested for deliberately causing no fewer than 27 accidents on roads in Almería and Murcia.
Their method was to either place large rocks on the carriageway or to cover over in black sacking the pointed bollards at road divisions which are known as ‘gorros de obispo’ – ‘bishops hats’.
They always acted late at night at weekends or bank holidays, often on the A-7 motorway between Vera in Almería and Lorca in Murcia. Another of their preferred roads was the A-92N between Vélez Rubio and Chirivel.
The Civil Guard released news of their arrest last week and say they did what they did just for enjoyment. No-one was injured in any of the accidents they caused.
The two men are also being charged with arson for setting 52 rubbish containers and 9 cars on fire between May and August last year."

The sad plight of the mentally ill sleeping on the streets of Spain
The sad plight of the mentally ill sleeping on the streets of Spain: "featured a British resident of San Roque, Mary Finlay, who is organising feeding trips to these unfortunates once a week – I will return to her work later in this article.
I start with the disclosure that at least two of the people on the town's streets are also mentally ill.
Their case has been highlighted by the Plataforma Los Parados – the action group speaking for the ten thousand plus jobless in the border town. They have written to the Andalucía Ombudsman over the men’s plight.
They say that because of the economic crisis, people with mental health problems have no roofs over their heads. Hence, they are sleeping outside in the winter cold and rain. One of these persons is 43-year-old Juan Medina López, who has been abandoned since before Christmas and is receiving no psychiatric help or social assistance. Nor can he and others like him be attended to at other municipal centres.
They told the Ombudsman that between Monday and Friday the men are invited for a meal and a shower at the Centro CEA, but at night they are left to their own devices. Incredibly, unless they are attended to by an Andalucía health service professional, they cannot be given a bed in any of the refuges for the “sin techos” – and no such person has been near them."

Two years in prison for man who left his ex blind in an argument
Two years in prison for man who left his ex blind in an argument: "man from Madrid has been sentenced to two years in prison after his ex girlfriend lost the little sight that remained in her eye when he hit out at her during an argument over her snoring.
45 year old María Paz R.P. had already lost her right eye in a previous accident which had left her with just 10% vision in the left and was a registered member of the ONCE organisation. EFE reports that she was able to live a relatively normal life with her remaining vision, but her sight has now become so impaired that the court considered her to be blind.
It happened in a hotel room in Benidorm where María Paz and her ex, Ignacio R.B., were on holiday with their 8 year old daughter. The couple had ended their relationship two years previously but had decided to spend some time together with their child. EFE notes that custody of the girl had been granted to the father owing to the mother’s ‘psychiatric problems’.
The argument began when the accused, who the woman had reported for abuse on three occasions in the past, was woken up by the woman’s snoring and punched her in her left eye"

Alicante withdraws controversial measures against beggars
Alicante withdraws controversial measures against beggars: "Alicante City Hall has decided to withdraw from a new bylaw on security measures for the public way penalties for those found begging on the streets.
The controversial measure, which included instructions to the police to confiscate any money a beggar may receive in charity from the public, led the police union to write to City Hall with a letter of complaint. Another from the UGT union’s section for the local police argued that this particular aspect of the bylaw was ‘clearly unconstitutional’, as there is no national law in Spain against begging."

Freddie Thompson, 30, has been living between Spain, Britain and Holland for most of the past year and reports reaching gardai suggest he is planning to travel even further away
Gangland feud set to heat up as truce fails - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie: "Freddie Thompson, 30, has been living between Spain, Britain and Holland for most of the past year and reports reaching gardai suggest he is planning to travel even further away because of fears that he is being targeted for assassination. It is understood that he has been checking locations in the Far East for a hideaway until he reckons the threats to his life have subsided.
The Crumlin-Drimnagh feud that Thompson had been centrally involved in was thought to have ended in July 2009 with the murder of one of his last remaining major rivals, Anthony Cannon, 26, the 16th man to be killed.
The feud is the subject of a TV3 series, Cocaine Wars, based on the book by journalist Mick McCaffrey, starting tomorrow evening.
Thompson's rivals are said to have regrouped and have recruited young members, including several still in their teens, who are believed to be intent on stamping their mark in the Dublin gang scene.
Thompson is at the top of the young south Dublin gang's list of targets, but he is also under threat from former associates who were behind the main Irish cocaine and heroin importation ring based in Spain. This ring was the target of last year's major operation by Spanish and other European police forces."
